Out of more than one lakh students who qualify the Mains exam to write JEE advanced exam, around 28,000 students qualify the exam for taking admissions to IITs. In such a competitive environment, one has to have some idea as to how to keep ahead in the race and it is no easy matter. Some basic tips like studying for 6-8 hours a day and rote memorizing are necessary but not sufficient for JEE Advanced exam.

  • A focused approach. Such an approach towards course content and syllabus prescribed for the exam is very important as it helps to analyze the time management required for every chapter. This planning will not help if one waits for the last two days before the exam to prepare; a student has to study round the year with proper time division for every chapter. Also, application based chapters are the most important for the exam. Theory is important to understand application but at the end of the day it is application which matters.
  • Remember, it is an objective type exam. The questions here require an in-depth understanding and proper application of concepts. The NCERT books need to be thoroughly exhausted before moving on to tomes like McGraw-Hill, S K Goyal and Amit Aggarwal. NCERT books are advantageous over such books as they explain difficult theories in layman’s language which can be used to solve the list of questions given in these tomes.
  • There is no alternative to practice. Mock tests, previous years questions, model test papers and practice papers for separate chapters in different subjects are the Holy Grail for JEE advanced. It is especially necessary to complete the tests within the prescribed time limit so that time management during the actual exam doesn’t become a headache. Most students are unable to clear the test because they could not complete solving the paper itself. Thus, it is very important to complete the paper at the first place.
  • Don’t forget the negative marking. Thus, unless one is completely sure of the answer or at least 70% sure, one shouldn’t mark the answer in the optical response sheet. Further, it is good to leave a question which one knows how to answer but which has a lengthy solution for the end so that other questions get adequate time.
  • Keep yourself calm and composed. Practical application should be given preference and with proper time management and honest practice, JEE advanced is not that difficult a hurdle for engineering aspirants if they have prepared well. So, take a deep breath and make DeBroglie happy in his grave.
